Minimally Invasive Surgery

What are minimally-invasive procedures?

Minimally-invasive surgical procedures use small incisions and special instruments equipped with cameras to enable the doctor to see inside the body without needing to make a large opening. Minimally-invasive approaches are used in many areas of medicine, including gynecology. Studies have shown minimally-invasive approaches cause less tissue damage and result in less bleeding, as well as a faster and more comfortable recovery. Not all procedures can be performed using minimally-invasive approaches, and the decision of which type of approach to use will be made after a full evaluation.

What is laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a type of minimally-invasive procedure that uses a special scope called a laparoscope, which is designed to be used through small incisions. Laparoscopes are equipped with cameras that project images to a computer monitor. Additional small incisions will be made to enable the insertion of instruments.

What is robot-assisted surgery?

The robot-assisted surgery uses computer technology to perform some aspects of surgery that require an especially high degree of precision. The robot does not perform the surgery; instead, the doctor uses the computer to perform specific steps for greater accuracy and superior results.

Can a hysterectomy be performed using a minimally-invasive approach?

Yes, hysterectomy can be performed using small incisions through the skin or via the vagina without any incisions through the abdomen. Some hysterectomies must be performed traditionally through an abdominal incision.
